Recommended car drives in Nepal

Middle Hills:

is one of the country’s most visited areas, home to the Pokhara Valley, the Annapurna Conservation Area, Buddhist temples and mountain peaks. It is a scenic drive through the valleys between the Himalayas and Tarai Mountains. Stay overnight in Overlander-Camping and the Himalayan Hideaway.

Western Tarai:

is the route for those who want to go on safari at the Chitwan National Park, visit Lumbini (the birth place of Buddha) and see the mammals at the Bardiya National Park. On this drive, rest in the Karnali Tented Camp or in either of the parks themselves.

Eastern Tarai:

take this route from Kathmandu east across the country to visit important Hindu sites and temples and to experience Nepal’s Indian-influenced culture. Those who have time can even continue into the mountainous tea region of India.

Driving a rental car in Nepal

Road network:

most roads are in reasonable shape, but those in the north are very hard to drive on with a motorhome. There are petrol stations in all cities.

Speed limits:

Urban roads: 40-50 kph
Provincial roads: no limit
National roads and motorways: no limit

Alcohol limits:

there is zero tolerance for drinking and driving, with possible imprisonment the punishment.
