Only an hour south of Hamilton is the Glowworm Caves of Waitomo. There are numerous subterranean caves to explore by raft or stay topside and enjoy the rolling green hills that are sill untouched by man’s expansion.

Also south are many of the film locations for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. In Hobbiton there are 12 acres where you can see homes or hobbit holes, the World Dragon Inn and the Mill. Other places in Middle Earth you can visit are Weather Drop Hollow and the Trollshow Forest.

Heading west you can hit the beaches and surf at Raglan, Ngarunui, Manu Bay, Ruapuke and Whale Bay. At some of these locations you should be an experienced surfer.

Hamilton to Wellington:

is a pleasant drive through the interior of the island. There are plenty of sites along the way, including Lake Tuapo, the World Heritage Tongariro National Park, Vinegar Hill and the beaches of the southwest tip of the North Island. Stay overnight at the Turangi Holiday Park and Picnic Ground or the Foxton Beach Motor Camp.
