The continental USA’s largest city, Jacksonville lies on the northeast corner of the state of Florida and is the most populous city in the state. It is filled with beautiful architecture, art galleries and historical areas and is a popular holiday destination.

Self-drive is a favoured way to explore Florida’s Atlantic coast beaches, historical districts and Panhandle region and hiring a fully equipped recreational vehicle is a great way to do this. The available choice of campervans is good and there are numerous camping sites where travellers can relax at the beach or in out-of-the-way towns.

Recommended Campervan Drives

Atlantic Coast:

from Jacksonville to Miami. This is the most travelled route in the state and includes popular coastal cities such as St Augustine, Daytona Beach, Palm Bay, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Along the way stay overnight in Ocean Grove Camping Grounds, Daytona Beach Carefree Park Resort and Del-Raton Campers Park.

The Emerald Coast:

one of Florida’s least visited areas but well-worth exploring with an RV. Drive along the Forgotten Coast and explore the undeveloped, rural city of Apalachicola after spending a night in the Carrabelle Beach RV Resort, relax in Panama City Beach’s Emerald Coast RV Resort and explore the historic city of Pensacola from the Perdido Cove Resort.

Everglades National Park:

from Jacksonville along the I-75 south to the tip of Florida and the magnificent Everglades National Park. Along the way rest in the Lake Waldena Resort to enjoy a glass-bottom boat ride and visit Busch Gardens from Happy Traveller RV Park.

Driving Advice
Road network:

Jacksonville is served by a number of excellent interstate highways as well as smaller routes. Plenty of petrol stations can be found on all routes.

Speed limits:

Urban roads: 30mph unless specified
Provincial roads: 55-65mph
National roads and motorways: 70mph

Alcohol limits:

0.8 per cent with modest fines.

Safety:

like the rest of the USA, driving here is on the right-hand side. Be careful of locals, as only 76 per cent of them drive with insurance.
